Supporting young carers
Savings & Loans has committed to donating $1.25 million to programs over five years to programs assisting young carers through scholarships and support programs.
What is a young carer?
Young carers are people under 25 who provide care for a parent or sibling who has an illness or disability.
In many cases, carers are provided with little financial or emotional support and are responsible for running a family home. Some of the tasks they’re responsible for include managing the family’s finances, shopping, cooking, cleaning and bathing or dressing their parent or sibling.
In some cases, children as young as eight years old become the primary caregiver for a loved one.
How will we help?
We work with a range of organisations to help young carers get the support they need.
The largest part of our program is be offering hundreds of young careers educational support through The Smith Family’s ‘Learning for Life’ program. Learning for Life provides scholarships, support and mentoring opportunities for young people to help them make the most of their opportunities.
We also work with The Smith Family to adapt Learning for life to help young carers and take their responsibilities into account.
Our Savings & Loans Visa Care Card will help to raise the profile of young carers in our community and help fund projects in support of young carers.
